Akwaaba,

We are ABENA AND AFIA. Our name is pronounced as Aabne’ and ‘Afiya’ I was born on a Tuesday. The female name for a Tuesday born is Abena, my grandmother was born on a Friday hence Afia. People born on particular days are supposed to exhibit the characteristics or attributes and philosophy associated with the day.

Name days are a cultural practice of the Akan people in Ghana. Meaning you automatically assume a name that signifies the day you were born on. This is different for male and female.

The label ABENA & AFIA is named after my grandmother and myself. It is a tribute to her for the woman she has helped me become. Just like the women in the weaving communities, she has always gone to great lengths to provide for her family.

All our products are lovingly sourced from Ghana. Every single item is handcrafted using a traditional weaving method passed down from generation to generation. By purchasing our products, you are not only getting limited edition unique pieces, you will be supporting these local communities. Our weavers only use materials that comes natural to them from their environment.

We as a company exist to expose you to high quality sustainable authentic craftsmanship that is not only unique but beautiful.

This label is created with the vision to meet you at whichever stage of life you are in. Whether it’s going to the beach with you loved ones, decorating your first home or wanting a unique handmade piece for your family expansion. We would love to grow with you, if you let us.

I wish I could say that ABENA AND AFIA was founded overnight. But despite all the hardship, we are finally here. We hope to embark on this adventure together with you.

Sincerely

A & A
